Test Description
The GRE® is a computer-adaptive test. It contains three sections: Analytical Writing, Math and Verbal. The test is written in English.
The Analytical Writing section tests your ability to express complex ideas clearly in an essay format, and stay tightly focused on the question asked. You are graded for your understanding of the question, the quality of your response, your clarity of presentation, your organization and the use of correct grammar, spelling and structure. You get 45 minutes for the issue essay and 30 minutes for the argument essay.
The Verbal section tests your knowledge and skills in vocabulary, reading comprehension, analogies, antonyms and sentence completion. The vocabulary level of the GRE® is very high, and affects the entire test. Once the vocabulary is mastered, along with specific test-taking techniques, students do very well. You get 30 minutes to complete this section.
The Math section tests knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, probability and some statistics. Students are not allowed to use calculators of any kind. To score well on this section, you really have to know a great deal, and be able to work quickly. You get 45 minutes to complete this section. |
